What Your Toddler Will Learn at Swimming Lessons

Swimming is a fun family event whether you’re swimming indoors or outdoors, in the ocean or in fresh water. Don’t forget that water safety starts with everyone knowing how to swim. That is especially important for the youngest family members – including toddlers.

Swimming Lessons for Toddlers

SafeSplash Swim School offers swimming lessons for different age groups. That includes toddlers. The toddler swim lessons consist of four classifications. Each of the four classifications has varying age ranges. Ages start as young as six months and run up to three years old. The four toddler swimming lesson classifications are as follows:

ParentTot I

Parents need to be in the pool with their little ones for these lessons. The toddler and a parent work together to build the foundational skills necessary for swimming and water safety.

These lessons start at six months old and run to 18 months old. Classes have a student-to-teacher ratio of six parent/student pairs to one instructor.

ParentTot II

As with ParentTot I, parents need to accompany their toddlers in the pool for these lessons. In this phase, the parent helps the toddler start to develop the necessary swimming skills crucial for learning strokes. Learning water safety skills continues to be a focus too.

These lessons are for ages one and a half years old to three years old. The student-to-teacher ratio is the same as in Parent Tot I - up to six parent/student pairs to one instructor.

Toddler Transition I

Parents don’t have to be in the water for this class phase. They may stay poolside for safety purposes to make sure their child follows the class rules. The focus of this class is twofold:  fundamental swimming and safety skills while learning how to safely be a part of a group class.

This class age ranges from two to three years old. Classes typically have up to three students to one instructor.

Toddler Transition II

This is the last of the four class phases. The class requires that each swimmer must be totally independent of a parent. The class focus is the same as Toddler Transition I - fundamental swimming and safety skills while learning how to safely be a part of a group class.

And like Toddler Transition I, the age range and student-to-instructor ratio are the same. Age ranges from two to three years old while classes have up to three students to one instructor.

Benefits of Swimming Lessons for Toddlers

Swimming lessons for toddlers offer plenty of other benefits besides water safety. Some of those benefits include:

  • Improved sleep patterns
  • Improved appetite
  • Builds muscle
  • Reduces risk of drowning

Safe Swimming Tips

Parents need to employ certain safety measures when their young ones are around the water. This is especially true for toddlers.

Touch Supervision

When you’re in the water, stay within arm's length and provide constant "touch supervision." Take your child with you if you need to get out of the water for any reason. Do so even if a lifeguard is on duty.

Minimize Distractions

A drowning accident can happen in less than two minutes. So make your child your sole focus in the water. That means putting the cell phone away. There will be plenty of time later to scroll through social media or check emails.
