It is truly important to Brian and me at SafeSplash-Austin that we can help EVERYONE learn how to swim, regardless of their fears or challenges. Autism is a complicated and often misunderstood disease that can isolate children and keep them from taking part in activities that many of us take for granted. Every child on this planet is unique and has their own strengths and weaknesses. The same is so for children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). While their condition may make it a bit more difficult to discover what makes them tick, that extra investment of time and patience is well worth the effort.
My name is Katie Walczak also known as “Miss Katie”. I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky to a family who raised me in and around the water. I have now been living in the Denver area for almost 2 years to get closer to my love of the outdoors and to continue my passion of teaching children and adults to swim.
I often get parents who ask me what’s wrong with their student and seem embarrassed about their child’s progress in the water. “Is she supposed to slap the water?” or “Why do his legs look like that?” and we hate “If you can’t stop moving and sit there and listen to your instructor we are never coming back!”.
