A recent Saturday morning swimming lesson was just wrapping up, and I was giving “high fives” to my four Beginner 1 students. Three of the kids quickly exited the dock but 10-year-old Allison peeled back her steamed goggles to reveal her misty, brown doe eyes.
While being a parent has its rewards, there is no greater feeling than being healthy, vibrant, and full of vitality. For many moms and dads, “competition" is thought to be a dirty word. They argue, not only does it place too much pressure on kiddos to be the best, but it also causes unnecessary stress leaving them feeling discouraged if they don't win.
So, to shield their kiddos from disappointment, many well-intentioned parents avoid competition for their kiddos altogether.
For many other moms and dads, competition is thought to be an unavoidable part of life. They argue that learning to operate in a competitive environment is a valuable skill.
So, to prepare their kiddos for the challenges they will face in adulthood, these parents encourage their kiddos to participate in sports and other competitive activities.
These days, the negative health effects of inactivity are widespread. Obesity is on the rise, as are conditions like diabetes. Many people have what they think are good excuses: too much work, no gym nearby, and so on. Yet these people are perfectly able to go out and get active. That’s not the same when you have a disability. You have to stay active, but there are legitimate reasons to have trouble with doing that. It’s not like you can go jog a few miles when you’re in a wheelchair.
However, that is rapidly becoming just another excuse. People with disabilities are finding more and more ways to participate in sports and activities. Not only is this helping their physical health, it’s helping break down barriers.
Life in the SafeSplash world is amazing, challenging, and fun! I get to spend my days surrounded by children and families who all have the mission of water safety and making sure their little ones can enjoy and be safe in the water. With all of the fun that I get to have, it also comes with a lot of hard work. And because of that, I have to remember to keep a good work and home life balance; Something I definitely have struggled with. However, I am learning to make sure I do have a balance for me. I’m sure a lot of people are in the same boat as me, and when I feel like I am stressing about all of the crazy things I have going on I have to remind myself that I have been working on three big aspects in my life!
