The reasons children and adults should learn to swim are many and varied. The most important of course is safety. Swimming is, arguably, the only sport that can save a life.
Drowning is still one of the most common causes of accidental death in children, so being able to swim is an essential life-saving skill.
Here are some other reasons why children and adults should learn how to swim:
-
Swimming keeps your heart and lungs healthy, improves strength and flexibility, increases stamina and even improves balance and posture.
-
Another great thing about swimming is that children and adults of any age or ability can take part in it and it is more accessible for individuals with additional needs than almost any other sport.
-
Swimming provides challenges and rewards accomplishments, which helps children and adults to become self-confident and believe in their abilities.
-
Swimming opens opportunities to make friends.
Swimming has impacted my life for the positive in so many ways. Had I not known how to swim I would have missed out on many life experiences, family adventures, and milestones. Had I not known how to swim I would not have been able to save that child that got caught in that strong current and was being swept out to sea. It’s never too late to learn to swim – it’s never too late to put yourself in a position to create incredible life experiences and memories – it’s never too late to be able to save a life.
