Did you know that drowning is the number one cause of death for children ages 1–4 in the U.S. and remains a leading cause of death for older children and adults? Or that over half (55%) of U.S. adults have never taken a swim lesson? Swim lessons have been shown to reduce the risk of drowning by 88%, giving parents a greater peace of mind and helping children become safer in and around all kinds of water. That’s why we’ve partnered with the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA), a leading organization dedicated to preventing drowning through education, advocacy, and innovation. Together, we’re working to expand water safety awareness and reduce drowning, one swim lesson at a time.

Davis Tarwater, Owner

For almost my entire life, I have been passionate about both water safety and the immensely rewarding gift that a lifelong enjoyment of swimming can provide. I grew up in this community and had the opportunity to represent Team USA as a member of the National Team for almost ten years. My career culminated at the 2012 London Olympics, where I won a Gold Medal as a member of the 4x200 freestyle relay. With my wife Brittany, an All-American swimmer at the University of Tennessee and current WVLT Channel 8 News anchor, we welcomed our first child in December 2019 and are excited to instill in him the same love and respect for the water. Outside the pool we love to travel, test our culinary skills at home and perfect tummy time with our new addition.

Swimming has been a huge part of my life since I was 8 years old when I started swimming for a summer league team in Knoxville. My love for the sport quickly grew and I ended up swimming competitively through high school and then into college at Western Kentucky University. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in health science, unsure about what I wanted to do in the future, but always knew my passion was the water. I worked a corporate health and wellness job, coached competitive swimming, and taught swim lessons for about 7 years before moving to Nashville for the opening of SafeSplash. It brings me so much joy to watch kiddos learn new skills, overcome their fear of the water, and become water safe! My husband, Cory, is also involved in the swimming world as a swim coach for Nashville Aquatic Club. When we are not at the pool, we love traveling, staying active, and fishing.

I began swimming at the age of 5 at a local summer swim team in Harrisburg, North Carolina and fell in love with the sport immediately. I swam competitively all the way through my senior year of high school until I went to college at the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 2018. During my time there, I coached swim team and taught swim lessons at SafeSplash in Knoxville before I graduated with a degree in Neuroscience and Public Health in 2022! In August of 2022 I moved to Nashville and began working at the Nashville West location as the Assistant General Manager. In my free time I love to shop, go on hikes, and spend time with my friends.

How long will it take my child to learn to swim?

It’s a question every parent faces as they strive to ensure their child is equipped for safety in and around the water. Which is why we’ve created the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise, a commitment to ensure your child learns critical self-rescue skills. We’ll teach them the skills needed to pass our water safety test in one year or less, or we’ll provide up to 2 months of free lessons to help them succeed.

Our proven curriculum teaches 10 essential swim skills designed to make every swimmer safer in the water. Your child will successfully perform these essential self-rescue and safety skills in 12 months or less – or we'll give you up to 2 months of free lessons to help them succeed.

Swimmers aged 4 and up in Beginner 2-4 are ready for the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer curriculum, where they’ll master self-rescue and water safety skills.
Our water safety test is designed to assess each swimmers ability to perform essential skills for self-rescue and safety. If they don’t pass within one year of consistent attendance, they’ll receive up to 2 months of free lessons to help them succeed.
Practice makes progress, so weekly attendance is required, with no more than 4 missed lessons to keep the promise intact (facility closures not included).
