7 Life-saving Pool Safety Rules: Your Guide to Safer Swimming!

Written by SafeSplash Swim School | February 16, 2024

Whether you're an experienced swimmer or just learning how to swim, knowing the ins and outs of pool safety is key for a fun and accident-free time in and around the water. In this guide, we're breaking down seven important pool safety rules that everyone should know. Stick with these rules, and you'll be splashing around worry-free in no time!

Why is Pool Safety Important?
Unfortunately, drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death worldwide. And for children younger than 5, 87% of drowning fatalities happen in home pools or hot tubs. That’s why swimming pool safety rules are so important; they are precautions you can take to lower the risk for you and your children. Accidents can happen fast, especially when we're having fun splashing around. These rules remind us to be careful and make sure we know what to do in case of an emergency. By following these swimming safety rules, we can all relax and enjoy our time in the pool, knowing we're doing our part to stay safe and look out for each other.

At SafeSplash, water safety is at the heart of every swim lesson. We help swimmers of all ages build essential water skills while learning how to make safer choices in and around the pool. From knowing when it’s safe to enter the water to understanding how to respond when someone needs help, practicing these skills regularly can help swimmers become more comfortable, capable, and confident in the water.

7 Pool Safety Rules Every Swimmer Should Know

1. No Running or Horseplay

Keep things safe around the pool by avoiding running on the deck. Slipping can lead to some nasty falls, like hitting your head or even taking an unexpected dip in the pool. And remember, no horsing around either – dunking and piggyback rides can quickly turn into accidents.

2. Identify the Lifeguard

It's important to know who's on lifeguard duty. Spot those lifeguards and appreciate what they do. They're the ones with the rescue gear and the know-how to keep us safe. So, listen up when they give instructions – they're looking out for everyone's well-being. And don't hesitate to ask a lifeguard for help or ask them a question regarding pool safety.

3. Always Ask Before Entering

Before you make a splash, give a quick shout to the grown-ups in charge. Make sure to receive confirmation from the adult that it is "okay" to get in. It's all about showing respect and making sure someone is keeping an eye out for you.

4. Look Before You Leap

Take a second to scan the pool area in which you are planning to jump into. You don’t want to accidentally land on something or someone! That includes what and who is above the water and under the water.

5. Never Swim Alone

You should always have an adult or lifeguard present. Even if you're a strong swimmer, it's good to have someone there in case you become tired.

6. Reach Or Throw, Don’t Go

If someone needs help in the water, don’t try to help by swimming out to them. That person could accidentally pull you under and harm you. Instead, toss them something that floats or yell for assistance.

  • Beginner swimmers can:
    • Throw a floating object to the person
    • Yell for help
  • Intermediate and Advanced swimmers can:
    • Throw a floating object to the person
    • Lay on their stomachs and extend a pole out
    • Yell for help

7. No Food Or Gum While Swimming

Munching on snacks or chewing gum while swimming? Not a good idea. You could choke or accidentally inhale it when you surface for a breath. Keep the snacks for after pool time.

Remember, whether you're swimming like a pro or just enjoying a leisurely dip, knowing these essential pool safety rules is key. From avoiding slips on the deck to knowing when to reach for help, each rule plays a crucial part in keeping everyone safe around the water. So, let's splash responsibly, keep an eye out for each other, and make every swim session a fun and worry-free experience for everyone involved!
