Swimming Lessons for Children with Special Needs

Raising a child with special needs presents unique challenges, but helping them learn how to swim doesn’t have to be one of them. At SafeSplash San Jose (Avaya Stadium), we believe swimming is a life skill®, and that all children are safer and happier when they learn the basics of water safety.

That’s why we offer private swimming lessons for kiddos with unique needs (including special swim lessons for San Jose (Avaya Stadium) children with autism, sensory struggles, ADHD, physical disabilities, and other challenges.) Swimming lessons keep kids of all ages safer. They can also be therapeutic and, for many special needs children, calming. Water can soothe sensory overload and give swimmers a feeling of weightlessness and relief from physical discomfort. Balance, coordination, strength, and range of motion can all be improved in the water. It’s not uncommon for parents to notice confidence and self-esteem boost, either.

When your child learns how to swim with SafeSplash San Jose (Avaya Stadium), they receive all the benefits of swimming in a safe, supportive and warm environment. And we mean warm both literally and figuratively — our pools are heated to a comfortable temperature and our instructors have a passion for giving every family a great experience.

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

Private

One-on-one instruction is a wonderful option for kiddos with special needs. Weekly classes on an ongoing basis.

Will my child with special needs benefit from swimming lessons?

All children should learn the basics of water safety, and how to swim if they are able. Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death in children with autism. Water provides unique challenges for all sorts of kids with special needs, especially since many kids are drawn to pools, lakes, and even bathtubs. Swim lessons offer a safe and gentle way to strengthen muscles, increase lung capacity, and so much more. You’ll help your child learn water safety, too.

Kids with special needs process the world differently, and they need flexible teachers who use child-focused methods. SafeSplash Certified™ Instructors have experience teaching children with a variety of unique needs, including:

  • Autism, Asperger’s and other related developmental syndromes
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome
  • Sensory processing disorder and other sensory challenges
  • Physical difficulties and disabilities

Prior to your child’s first San Jose (Avaya Stadium) swim lesson, we’ll chat about your family’s goals, get to know your child's abilities, and you can ask us any questions. You can even come in and meet the team. After this initial meeting, we’ll develop a customized teaching plan and connect you with an experienced instructor who will be a great personality match.

Do you offer tuition support for kids with special needs?

While we do not directly offer tuition support for swimming lessons for special needs children, we do partner with third-party organizations that may be able to help. We’d love to welcome your child to swim class, so please get in touch with our team to learn more.

INFANT & TODDLER SWIM LESSONS

We offer infant and toddler swim lessons as early as 6 months of age to help build confidence and get your infant comfortable in the water. Our small ParentTot classes are a great way for parents to bond and socialize with their kiddos while teaching vital water safety skills like breath control, floating and kicking. We also offer Toddler Transition classes for kiddos ages 18-36 months. Parents join their swimmers poolside until they are ready to transition to a small group class without a parent nearby. Both classes focus on foundational water safety skills as well as developing a comfort in the water, which are crucial in developing swimming skills.

Private Lessons

PRIVATE & SEMI-PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

Our private swim lessons allow swimmers of all ages and levels to progress through our curriculum at their own pace with one of our certified swim instructors. Each 30 minute class will be customized around mastering the skills to become a better, stronger, safer swimmer. Private and semi-private lessons (two swimmers with one instructor) are great options if you are looking for more time focused on your individual swimmer or siblings wanting to be in the same class.

Swim Team Prep

SWIM TEAM PREP

The SafeSplash Wave® program is an endurance, strength, and swim team prep program that takes swimmers who already have knowledge of the competitive swimming strokes and want to refine their swimming skills. Our Wave program is broken up into swimmer groups based on swimmer ability, physical conditioning and current knowledge of the strokes in accordance to USA Swimming standards and our SafeSplash curriculum. Each session includes a set workout with an out of water coach whose primary goal is to mimic the experience one would have on a recreational swim team.
