Why Keep Kids in Swimming Lessons all year?

The holidays have come and gone and while we love spending time with our kiddos, parents and kids alike need to keep up routines. One thing we have learned is that keeping kids in extracurriculars help parents enjoy some much-needed alone time and keeps kids active while breaking the holiday boredom.  Here's an idea: consider keeping them enrolled in swimming classes, and maybe adding a few extra days of pool time into their schedule. There are a lot of benefits of swimming during winter break.

5 Reasons to Keep Your Child in Swimming Lessons

Just because school is out doesn't mean after-school activities need to be put on hold. Most swimming programs don't take a break over the holidays!

1. To Give Their Days Structure

Not having school messes with a lot of kids' routines. Suddenly, not having to wake up early means pajama time from sunup to sundown. And while it's okay for kids to take a break and relax, it's still good for them to have a routine. Incorporating swimming lessons into their day is a good way of finding structure. It gets them something to look forward to and plan their days around.

2. To Reinforce What They've Already Learned

Swimming benefits a lot from muscle memory. From knowing what muscles to engage in different swimming strokes to nailing the right breathing movements, learning to swim well takes practice! Encouraging your child to go to their swim lessons pushes them to repeat the same movements over and over again. The more practice they get, the better swimmers they'll become. Suddenly breaking their swimming lesson streak over the holidays will certainly set them back—and will make it harder to pick things back up once break is over.

3. To Overcome Blocks

Is your child feeling frustrated with their swimming skills? Maybe they feel like new strokes are too hard to learn and they're not advancing quickly enough. It happens! Everyone hits plateaus sometimes, but every plateau can be overcome. The holidays are the perfect time for that because your child has more time to spend in the water. So don't skip their winter break swimming lessons, consider even getting them a 1-on-1 class with a coach.

4. To Stay Active

Every child should get daily exercise, even during the holidays. Many kids stop moving their bodies once school lets out, but that's a bad habit to get into. Keeping them enrolled in swim classes guarantees they'll get their heart pumping in a fun way. Not only is it good for their cardiovascular health, but it's also a great way of getting them to spend their pent-up energy and wind down at the end of the day.

5. To Have Wholesome Fun

For many kids, not having school means they can spend most of their break playing games or watching TV. Those are important relaxing activities perfect for the winter break, but everything is best in moderation. If you don't want your children obsessing over screens too much this holiday season, sending them to swimming lessons is a great idea. It's a ton of fun and engaging. What kid wouldn't love getting to splash around with their friends?

Healthy Habits Don't Take a Break!

Regardless of your child's swimming abilities, keeping them going to the swimming pool over winter break is the best thing you can do. It helps build healthy habits, gives them a chance to learn to swim, and allows them to practice their swimming strokes. Find a local Swimlabs pool and give your child the gift of fun, healthy exercise.
